What is Multani Mitti? Uses and Benefits

Multani Mitti, also known as Fuller's Earth that is known for it's ability to absorb excess oil and dirt from the skin, which makes it an excellent material for face masks and other skin care applications.

History of Multani Mitti

Multani Mitti is also called Fuller's Earth because of it's bleaching properties. Historically, textile workers used the clay in a process called "fulling", which is a step in woolen cloth making. During this step the "fuller" removes oil, dirt and other impurities from the the cloth.

What is Multani Mitti Made Of?

The active components in Multani Mitti consist primarily of hydrous aluminum silicates (clay minerals). These are minerals such as montrmorillonite, kaolinite, and attapulgite. Other smaller components that may be present include, calcite, dolomite and quartz. 

Uses of Multani Mitti

Multani Mitti is famously known for it's bleaching or brightening qualities. This is due it's active component calcium bentonite. Because of it's bleaching, oil absorbing and cleaning properties it is a very useful ingredient in face packs.

Users claim that the clay can make their skin clearer and reduce the visibility of blemishes on the face.

Multani Mitti Face Pack Recipe

Ingredients Needed

  • 1 small cup multani mitti
  • 2 tablespoons rose water

Directions

  1. Mix multani mitti and rose water till they form a smooth paste.
  2. Apply this homemade, pretty-smelling pack on your face evenly and leave it on for 15 minutes.
  3. Wash it off after it completely dries.

Repeat this process at least thrice a week for best results.
